The Health Care and Career Occupations Grant Sees Participants Come Full-Circle
Bill Larson’s career goal is to become a Registered Nurse. His journey began over 8 years ago when he began taking one pre-requisite class at a time while supporting his family full-time. When Bill was laid off in June of 2010, he enrolled full-time at Chemeketa Community College in order to complete his remaining pre-requisite classes and then apply for the Nursing Program in 2011.
In the meantime, he was considering training as a Certified Nurse Assistant, but without an income he couldn’t afford the training costs. In June of 2010, Bill submitted an application for the Health Care Grant and was selected to participant in the Grant’s very first CNA1 training program. He successfully completed his CNA1 training and then continued on with the Grant to obtain his CNA2 certification in December of 2010. Several months later, Bill landed a full-time position as a CNA2 with Salem Hospital.
Happily for Bill, his work hours will decrease once again when he begins his studies as a first year Nursing Student with Chemeketa Community College!
